North Chicago’s Water Treatment Plant provides for the operation, repair, and maintenance of the city’s water supply system. The plant functions with eleven employees working around the clock keeping the plant running 24 hours per day /365 days per year. The plant was built in the 1930s. It was expanded in the 50s, 70s, and 90s, with the most recent addition in the mid-2000s. With numerous mechanical systems and the need to provide quality water, the plant is striving to exceed citizen and EPA expectations by modernizing the plant prior to EPA regulations and using energy efficient equipment to keep costs down. Since 2005, the plant has implemented the several major improvements including a surge tank, four variable frequency drives, refurbishing of the water screens, refurbishing of heating and dehumidifying systems, roofing replacement, filter enhancement, SCADA upgrades and enhancements, chlorine conversion from a gas to liquid-based chlorine treatment system.
